AKECHI MITSUHIDE / 明智光秀
- A subject of interest which a lot of people are afraid of me talking about. Seriously, what's so bad about my favorite historical figure? The unanswered questions, the mystery, the depth, the controversy! It's
just like a television show, speaking of which there is a drama but I haven't watched it, but in form of paper! And text books! One of my favorite subjects when I was in highschool was the European history focus in
my Social Studies class. Napoleon was my favorite until Akechi Mitsuhide came along...
Apparently Mitsuhide sort of looked like this way back in the day... Well, according to sources like Samurai-Archives.com, one of the few sources I "trust" because they state their sources, but
am also a bit skeptical at some things there, online. My favorite would be the nice books in libraries or those online databases at the University.
The thing that most interests me about Akechi Mitsuhide was the incident at Honnouji (本能寺の変) where he revolted and marched against Oda Nobunaga. To make a long story short, Oda sent Akechi to support Hideyoshi as he is struggling against
Mouri, but instead Akechi sends his army to attack Oda as he is at Honnouji. But why does he do this? No one knows. That is what makes Akechi Mitsuhide interesting to me. The "if" factor of one of the highpoints of his career as a General, and the reason for the Battle of Yamazaki
which ended up with Akechi's downfall. I was also told by a professor at my University that they supposedly couldn't find Oda Nobunaga's remains in the aftermath at Honnouji, so the question of whether of not Oda Nobunaga really died also strikes me as something interesting.
The thing that "fuels" me to constantly talk about Akechi Mitsuhide is probably my decision of not writing a paper on him in a Pre-Modern Japan history class I took in 2005. I thought it'd be clever to write about something which may be covered
on the final exam instead of doing reasearch on something which was barely touched on in class. So, I wrote about "The Influence of Foreignism in the Fall of the Tokugawa Bakufu". It was pathetic. I feel pathetic. For not taking that opportunity,
look at how I've become. Horrible.
Akechi Mitsuhide in Forms of Videogame Media
Since history is interesting, history based videogames are also interesting, to a certain extent. I'm more so interested in the representation of the historical figures themselves than the game. A few videogame incarnations of Akechi Mitsuhide which I've come across
are the following...

戦国無双 / SENGOKU MUSOU SERIES
Since I am Mitsuhide biased, I would naturally like a "good character" to be Mitsuhide right? So here we go, KOEI's rendition of Akechi Mitsuhide in their Sengoku Musou / Samurai Warriors series. In the first game, it is apparent that he has a close relationship with Mori Ranmaru. His story
is shaped around it, and their connection to Oda Nobunaga before and after the incident at Honnouji. The second game in the series, well I'll get back to you on that when I actually play it...

戦国BASARA / SENGOKU BASARA SERIES
Akechi Mitsuhide in the Sengoku BASARA is quite different as he is an albino sadist. He loves war so much that he "climaxes", yes I'm serious now you understand why CAPCOM took him out as a usable character in Devil Kings. They can edit it, but the position which he holds his weapon afterwards
may not exactly be for everyone who plays this game. Anyways, in the second game of the series, Mitsuhide is a cannibal in his opening cutscene...
